REVIEW :

The third in a series of slow-burning epics, this pair of drone/noise makers seem intent on mining the sound of twisted power lines. Akin to the sounds captured of some prison detail ploughing an endless granite field with a hill of bones, this is minimalist in terms of sound but a powerful hypnotic piece nonetheless.

The only glance at humanity Quarter Mile Volcano gives is the degradation of Karst’s noise vocals bloodying the mix towards the disc’s demise .

”More” is the follow-up to ”4 AM”. Small Things on Sundays continue to explore sounds between dark ambient and drone. This time the duo digs deeper into the darkness with more industrial and powerful sounds.

 ”More” is a journey into apparently desolate sites or constructions devoid of human activity. The music is a sonic interpretation of these places. It could be the vibrations of machines in empty buildings or the distant waves crashing in on the shoreline. It could be the wind audible in an old factory vent or the hissing sound underneath the car-tires on a rainy motorway, its still hard to tell which is the original source.

 On ”More”, Small Things on Sundays continue to use vinyl samples, destroyed guitars and other sound sources,…….. distorted, re-sampled and mutated, again and again, until a new expression is obtained.

REVIEW :

 This duo, Henrik Bagner and Claus Poulsen, hail from Denmark. I am still not sure if they still use just ‘electronic treatments of vinyl records in any tempo’ – might it be silly to suggest it does, since the title is ‘More’? It doesn’t sound like something has really changed for them, maybe that would be too early, come to think of it. Things are still very dark, very ambient and with much drones. Its actually as good as their previous ’4AM’ release, when, as said, also very much along similar to that one. Maybe that’s a bit of a disappointment then, but the six pieces are quite nice. Well worked out, covering the grey and black ends of the sound spectrum.   ( Frans De Waard , Vital Weekly 732 )

I once had a house mouse. It used to leave droppings behind my toaster after it had scoffed all the crumbs i’d left. I could never have caught it though for it was far too cute & no bother, really. I don’t know why people kill mice, they really are cruel bastards. I loved the idea of my mouse having a massive network of tunnels & random acquaintances stretching down through peoples terraced homes all the way down the road. Oh? What? I’m supposed to be reviewing this CD? Oh sorry….This particular mouse is a rather noisy, doom-bound example. He likes the sound of a nuclear explosion fed through an filthy echo filter, claps of thunder behind huge, bleak mountains and the sound of torrential rain outside a lonely, isolated haunted cottage in the peak district. On Ketamine. This is a rather oppressive but thoroughly compulsive listen. If this is the music mice make when they’re pissed off…..  ( Brian at Norman records )

Hot Dang – i can’t stop playing this.
we’re setting out on a journey along a dusty highway into death valley or some such hellpit, a place into which noone or thing has been for a millenia. Nothing much ever happened here & what ever did occur echoes still like some abandoned shopping trolley filled with our forefather’s hopes, dreams and aspirations… theres no pay off, its bleak, lonely, dark & dry, – this is one massive ghostly vista with no happy endings. Parallells can be draw between this and Double Leopards’ Halve Mean although the sounds here are much more subdued. Soundscapes from Striate Cortex are new with an edge often all too absent from this familiar territory tagged as drone or dark ambient, this stuff right here is much more “full immersion floatation tank” -, there are perhaps others who have begun to tire of all those “Depthy drones” or “Frozen Landscape” formula releases which occupy so much space in music collections. Here is something a bit new – no restrictions, – thoughfully created & care is taken by this label to produce a “happening” – an artwork which guarantees room for an imagination. This tasty limited CD release from Striate Cortex showcases two new compositions from Brighton/High Wycombe based recording artists Plurals. Now this is a proper intense drone-athon essentially made up of a brooding mix of synth ambiance and deathly space howls. The use of synth here is spell-binding and conjures up all sorts of interstellar imagery in my super spaced out brain. Additional brass or reed instruments contribute to the unsettling atmosphere and penetrate the ear like the wailing of new born child. With two tracks clocking in at approximately 40 minutes this is intensive stuff but a must have for all you Natural Snow Buildings types out there. I should mention the tasteful leafy sleeve…it’s really pweetty.    (Brian at Norman Records)

The deliciously named On the Wrong Planet opens his debut album musically as majestically as the package crafted to hold it.

Peeling open the cellophane flap and unfolding the A4-sized protective sheet designed by Claus Poulsen reveals a beautiful black and gold, hand-painted pocket sleeve housing a handsome insert card and printed disc repeating the outermost cover design.

This eight-track, hour-long journey is an epically restrained journey into fantastical depths of exploratory uncertainty, beginning with great optimism and beauty before travelling through an asteroid belt of quiet but dense static, obliterating any possible message.

The journey beyond and outward unfolds with the same kind of wonder – and terror – that strikes you when you take time to really gaze up at the night sky. That all that distance could arouse so much emotion. There are layers upon layers here, spheres inside spheres.

Dark ambient, without a doubt, but glimmering with a thousand points of light. Henrik Bagner, one half of the admirable Small Things on Sunday with the above-mentioned Poulsen, has furthermore manipulated viola work by Astrid B. Johansson, who lends grace to ”You Can´t Make Me Forget” and ”You Can´t Break Me”, track titles which raise the question of the more personal, emotionally invested side of this weightless and beatless but still very visceral recording. REVIEW :

Unsettling Starbursts opens up here with a twenty minute piece of bird calls and drones. The latter are a bit distorted which form an interesting contrast with the bird sounds of spring time (and with the birds outside I guess). Its hard to say wether I think this is really good. The semi-distortion ruins it a bit for me. Bjerga/Iversen also have twenty minutes at their disposal. They too evolve their business around field recordings from an airport lounge (in The Netherlands judging by some of the announcements, maybe on their November visit to Extrapool?), feeding it through a delay pedal. I imagine them waiting in an airport and setting up their mobile equipment and play a live piece on the spot. Maybe that’s my romantic side at looking at these matters? It sounds like that, and best is not to disturb those assumptions. Its a great,

silent piece of electronics and field recordings. Perhaps the sort of thing ThrouRoof had in mind, but now working wonderfully well.

REVIEW :

The opener ‘Womb of your hand’ has this stunning ritualistic sway about it, the contoured guitar falling endlessly through long fingers, all dew glinted… secondary vocal shadows follow, rooting through the dark soil in search of moonlight… feeling like brambles twisting into your skin, injecting unwritten knowledge intravenously as smokey mirrors bear strange fruit.….

A few tracks on this EP burn out on a semi ambient vibe, as if half asleep, delicate, like faded lithographs or a seed bearing breeze, this ever present sense of rising thunder churning away in the background, real headphone material – especially ‘wolf’s milk’…

On others, the sonic apparitions are intersected with sparkling chords… nautilus lustres throwing out the eastern flavours… suddenly a match strikes, becoming scarlet tongues spiralling grey clouds.…

The captured panoramas of the last track get my vote, those unfurling stitches of guitar harmonics and voice melding, the odd fractured drum falling through the resulting drone, all quite beautiful… then a harpsichord chime cuts into the introspective vibe and opens up a jewellery box inside your head…  ( By Cloudboy, at ROTTENMEATS ……..   full review and video here )
